  • On Saturday, September 22nd, Susie Ethel (Fisher) Brakefield, loving Mama and Granny, entered eternal life. Susie was born on December 21st, 1928 in Silver, AR to the late Will and Martha Fisher and Presbyterian in faith. She was predeceased by her seven siblings, and is now reunited with her husband, Rudolph Brakefield. Mama is survived by her four children: Roy (Ella) Black, Betty (John) Boling, Johnny Black, and Nancy (Lance) Booth. Granny also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Shawna (Gary) Spier, Greg (Angie) Black, Jeff (Samantha) Black, Shanda (Eric) Powell, Kalyn (John Paul) Jones, Jenna Jones, and seven great grandchildren. Mama’s family list would not be complete without including her two loving and devoted caregivers, Patricia (Les) Harper and Suszie Muldoon. They loved and cared for her deeply, and she loved them both like family.

Susie tried on a variety of hats in her working days; anything from making shoes at Munro Footwear, clerical work at the Montgomery County Hospital, to selling cattle at the Montgomery County Sale Barn. She will best be remembered as a loving, caring, and devoted wife, Mama, and Granny. She was deeply loved in return and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Susie had many passions and hobbies throughout her 89 years, and those enthusiasms would evolve as her body would adjust to life’s changes with age. In her younger years with strong legs and sharp vision, she could be found digging for crystals and/or sewing an outfit or even a wedding dress may be on her agenda. On a beautiful day, you could bet that she had her digging tools, a picnic lunch, her kids and any of her many sisters who wanted to tag along to go look for those shiny points. Also, she had a talent comparable to no other for sewing anything. With only a picture, not even a pattern, she could duplicate the exact replica of that perfect dress. When the walking became a little harder and the eye sight became less sharp, Susie monitored and adjusted to life’s changes and found beading with wire and crocheting with string less tedious than sewing with fine thread. Again, show her a picture and she could make it for you. However, Susie’s love for a good mystery novel surpassed all. She did love a good book, and she loved the Good Book. Heaven gained another angel, and to her family and friends the most loved angel of all.

Please join us in celebrating Susie’s enduring and ever present life in family and friends on Wednesday September 26, 2018 at Mount Ida First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 9:00 AM. Service will follow at 10:00. Burial will be at Stanley-Standridge Cemetery. Bro. Russell Hull will be officiating. Pallbearers are Eric Powell, John Paul Jones, Greg Black, Jeff Black, Gary Spier and Jerry McNabb. Services under the direction of Thornton Funeral Home in Mount Ida, AR. Betty, we seem to live a million miles from Montgomery county with everything that complicates life here at home. I have missed your mom's funeral and now your dad's. Please forgive me. We are expecting grandchild #9 and there is always something happening. Larry still hasn't retired so I can't drop things and travel much. Roger says Polly is better but still recuperating? I should have your address although I still DO have your phone number. Sending you so much love. Still praying for your granddaughter too. Send me an update sometime, Tanya
